Small Space, Big Style: 6 Holiday Decorating Tips

October 01, 2014
The holidays are filled with friends, presents, good food...and a lot of extra stuff. From trees and decorations to trays of baked goods and guests coming and going, it’s hard to stay organized, especially if you’re in a small space. Here are some stylish tips that save space without sacrificing your holiday flair!

Give the tree a lift

Let’s start with the tree. To eliminate this floor space hogger, place a smaller, pint-sized version on top of a cleared bookcase. Use the shelves below to store presents and display your holiday décor. Extra floor space required: Zero. Room for tree and presents? Check! Give the tree a lift

Chalk it up

Wall space is the place with this 2-D DIY tree. No floor space is needed, and it’s a ton of fun to decorate with the whole family! Chalk it up

MATERIALS

  • Adhesive chalkboard rolls (we used two rolls each 15” wide x 3’ long)
  • Chalkboard paint or chalk
  • Yarn and tulle
  • Pom-pom garland
  • Printed tape

INSTRUCTIONS

  • 1 Adhere chalkboard rolls to the wall and add extra tape on the corners.
  • 2 Next, paint on your tree with the chalkboard paint or chalk.
  • 3 Create yarn and tulle poms and tape onto your tree with washi tape, or use colored chalk to draw designs and ornaments. Have fun and be creative!

Not sure what to do with all those old family photos? This modern take on a traditional holiday wreath gives you a trip down memory lane. Choose pictures from your past year, previous holidays, or old pictures from generations past, and arrange them on the wall with double-sided tape. Drink cocoa, tell funny stories about family members no longer here, and laugh at silly snaps from the past year. Cherish the memories with a photo wreath

Don’t just winterize—festivize!

Storefront windows shouldn’t have all the fun during the holiday season! Apartment windows offer the perfect spot to display some fun holiday décor—a great option when space is limited. Hang small bud vases from the windows, add some evergreen branches or dried berries, and you’ve instantly created a pretty, wintry look in the room! We used real evergreens to bring in their seasonal scent. Don’t just winterize—festivize!

Bring baubles back

Having a dinner party? If your table space is limited, try decorating the backs of each chair with sparkly baubles. It’s a festive way to dress up the table, and still leaves room for all your delicious food. Just hang ornaments from ribbon and secure to the backs of chairs with tape.  Bring baubles back

Store holiday baking staples like flour and sugar in Ziploc® holiday containers. For a complete baking kit, include essentials like cookie cutters, muffin liners, sprinkles, icing, food coloring, and baker’s twine. When you realize you left one of your kid’s teachers off the cookie list by mistake, your last minute baking will be a breeze!   Make a last minute baking kit

We love getting holiday cards, but they can really pile up! Before you stash them away, try this stylish alternative. Give an old frame (think thrift store or Grandma’s basement) a new purpose as a greeting card display. Frame ‘em and hang ‘em

MATERIALS

  • Frame
  • Staple gun
  • Twine
  • Small ornaments
  • Mini clothespins

INSTRUCTIONS

  • 1 Remove the glass and backing from the frame. With a staple gun, simply staple the twine to the back inside edges of the frame.
  • 2 Hang some small ornaments on the twine to add some color.
  • 3 Then hang cards with mini clothespins. Now you can see all those smiling faces in a more organized and stylish way!
