Cookie Decorating Like A Pro

March 09, 2015
Unless you’re a pastry chef, making elegant holiday cookies can be tough. Luckily, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve to take the stress out of holiday cookie decorating while still resulting in picture-perfect cookies.

Ingredients

  • Frosting (can be store-bought or homemade)
  • Edible glitter or sprinkles
  • Cookies (the best part!)

Instructions

  • 1 Start by microwaving your frosting very slowly. It’s a bit of a trial-and-error process, but it definitely pays off. I start with 15 seconds at half power and give my frosting a good stir. Keep heating it up until it’s got a slightly runny consistency, perfect for dipping. Once you’ve gotten the right consistency, dip each cookie into the frosting! I like to do halves because it reminds me of those fun black and white cookies you find in New York City bakeries.
  • 2 Before the frosting cools, sprinkle edible glitter and sprinkles over the cookie. I like to do this over a Ziploc® container so that I can re-use whatever falls off of the cookie. (This is also a great time to get the kids to help out, too!)
  • 3 Once you’ve glittered your cookie, place it on the edge of an extra Ziploc® holiday container or lid. I find that this helps the frosting to harden without getting my countertops sticky. I wanted my cookies to feel modern and sophisticated, so I opted for white frosting with opalescent and metallic glitter. Your local craft supply store is a great place to get creative and discover all kinds of amazing edible glitters.
  • 4 Tip: Homemade cookies are a festive gift for teachers, family, and friends during the holidays. And they look extra classy in a Ziploc® holiday container! Download one these printable gift tags to jazz up your gift wrap!

Be sure to make extra for yourself!
